Manteca was founded in 1861 by Joshua Cowell. It is located 76 miles east of San Francisco and designated as one of the Central Valley cities. The residents came up with the name "Monteca" for their community after the Central Pacific Railroad laid the track through the city. The misspelled word was never corrected so the "Manteca" name became official with Joshua Cowell as its first mayor.

This city is known to be family oriented and located in the center of major highways and railroads. Manteca was an agricultural city until the bay area housing prices skyrocketed in the late 90s and early 2000s. People started to purchase homes here due to its affordable prices and continue to commute to work.
